Heroes Among Us

International heroes, from the little-known to the widely celebrated, appeared on stage in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on November 23. Third graders portrayed these heroes during their annual Biography Day.

The children selected people who exemplify the virtues of honesty, kindness, responsibility, and respect—the four traits on McDonogh’s character compass. Their teachers changed the focus of the biography activity this year to correspond with the school’s coordinated, K-12 character education effort.

After researching their heroes, the third graders wrote and memorized speeches describing them.

When it came time to deliver those speeches, students took the microphone one by one and described their heroes. One chose to portray Alexandra Scott, whose modest lemonade stand became a major fundraiser for children’s cancer research. Another selected football player Michael Oher, the subject of the current movie “The Blind Side.” Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf made an appearance, as did Indian spiritual leader Mohandas Gandhi. Astronauts Jim Lovell, Neil Armstrong, and Mae Jemison took the stage, as well.

”What makes a hero?” the third graders asked themselves back in September, when they began the project. Ordinary people who saved lives, like Chesley Sullenberger and Ryan Hreljac. Public figures who use their fame to do good, like Oprah Winfrey and Lance Armstrong. Inventors, statesmen, sports figures, and religious leaders past and present also made the list.

On Biography Day, the audience learned a great deal about heroes they recognized and those they didn’t.

“I am incredibly proud of the children for what they have done,” said third grade teacher Hilary Flint.
