Children living at St. Vincent's Center will receive homemade muffins and cards to brighten their Thanksgiving holiday, courtesy of kindergartners, the K-2 Eagles, in Tammy Rice's class.
"For each holiday we make different activities and holiday-themed crafts to bring the holiday spirit to the children at St. Vincent's," explains Rice.
Located in Timonium, St. Vincent's is a residential home for children who have been removed from their families due to abuse or neglect. Rice volunteers there once a week and knows the children in Nazareth House there.
The kindergartners rotated among stations in their classroom, making muffins, and cards. "I gave the children specific people to make cards for, and I told them little things about each child. I thought this might make it more meaningful and concrete, giving them more of a connection to the children they are helping," said Rice.
"The process of making butter was huge fun for the children. All we did was put heavy whipping cream in a small glass jar and then shake the jar back and forth for a few minutes. After some shaking, the contents turn into whipped cream, and after more shaking it turns into butter," said Rice.
Parent volunteers manned each station and a child's babysitter donated the baby food jars for butter-making.
For Halloween, Rice's students filled goodie bags. They made Halloween ornaments and assembled supplies for Halloween crafts that the St. Vincent's children could make themselves. Then they made a card for each bag and added candy and a Halloween poster.
Helping the children of St. Vincent's "has been a very powerful experience for my students," said Rice. She began the project last year, when she taught prefirst.
Involving kindergartners has been just as positive. "This Thanksgiving I am sure the children of Nazareth house at St. Vincent's will be thankful for the generosity of the K2 Eagles."
