The entire school community came together on Friday, May 15 for the annual Headmaster's Day awards ceremony on Childs Memorial Terrace.
Nine faculty and staff members received honors for 25 years of service to the school: Mimi Brandau (riding), Billy Ray Cole, Jr. (maintenance), Colby Gill (maintenance), Ane Lintvedt-Dulac (history), Dan McGuire (math, administration), Frayda Salkin (archives), Jeff Sanborn (history), Carolyn Shamer (housekeeping), and Ken Waller (math). Headmaster Charlie Britton recited a remarkable list of contributions by each honoree.
Two separate honors went to third-grade teacher Vicki McMillan, who will retire in June after 23 years in the classroom. Despite her wishes not to be recognized, Headmaster Charlie Britton paid her a deserving tribute anyway. The extraordinarily humble Mrs. McMillan wasn't there to witness the standing ovation she received from all in attendance. She had permission to be absent.
Mrs. McMillan was also recognized with the Irvin S. Naylor ’54 Courage Award, established by the Class of 1954 in honor of Naylor, paralyzed since a riding accident in 1999. The award recognizes exceptional fortitude. For years Mrs. McMillan took care of her husband, former teacher-coach Mike McMillan, until his death from Huntington's Chorea last spring.
Legacy editor Becca W. '09 surprised longtime French teacher Peggy Warner by dedicating the 2008-2009 yearbook to her.
Said Becca: "Whether it is her involvement in the choir trips, cheering on the football team, hosting boarders at her house for campus parents, helping with the French club, or her joie de vivre she does just that: she brings the best out of those around her. For over 30 years, Madame Warner has devoted her love for education to McDonogh, and we proudly dedicate the 2009 Legacy in her honor."
After lower- and middle-schoolers were dismissed, more than 50 upper schoolers received prizes and awards for academic and artistic achievements, citizenship, leadership, and character. Also announced were the winners of the Sophomore Oratory Contest and performers for the 2009 Stewart Senior Honors Recital.
The celebration included musical numbers by the Upper School and Middle School concert bands, the Upper School jazz band, the seventh and eighth grade choir, and the Lower School chorus.
