The annual Battle of the Books engaged middle schoolers from McDonogh and five other independent schools in a Jeopardy-style competition at Glenelg Country School on May 14.
McDonogh sent four teams, one representing each grade level. Together, students claimed a first place and three second place awards. They tested their knowledge of designated books against competing teams from Baltimore Lutheran, Boys Latin School, Calvert School, Glenelg Country School, Roland Park Country School.
The fifth grade team of Preston R., Samuel A., Jack D., Shannon C., and alternate Dylan O. placed second.
Sixth graders Tori L., Margaret S., Harini R., Madison D. and alternate Sara S. won first place in their battle round.
Jake H., Andi C., Jennifer H., Christy C. and alternate Pegah B. made up the seventh grade team, which placed second.
The eighth grade team of Payton E., Alice T., Stephen H. and Christian N. also took home second place honors and good memories of their participation in Battle of the Books.
Librarian Stasha Gibbs coordinated the competition among McDonogh students and coached the participants.
Fifth grade teacher and former librarian Nancy McFadden created the Battle of the Books competition in 2000 to inspire students to read. It has been an annual activity ever since.
