The annual Battle of the Books engaged middle schoolers from McDonogh and four other independent schools in a Jeopardy-style competition at Boys Latin School on Wednesday, May 12.
McDonogh sent four teams, representing each grade level. The students' knowledge of designated books was tested as they competed against teams from Baltimore Lutheran, Boys Latin School, Calvert School, and Glenelg Country School. In the end, McDonogh claimed three first place banners and a second place award.
The fifth grade team of Duncan F., Joe D., Margaret D., Sam S., and Mohit P. placed second after a nail-biting tie-breaker.
Sixth graders Samuel A., Jack D., Brendan T., and Kevin H. won first place in their battle round with 104 points.
The seventh grade team of Tori L., Harini R., Margaret S., and Madiosn D. also came in first. The group has successfully battled together since fifth grade, winning the competition every year. This time was no different. The team won with 104 points, missing only six out of 20 questions.
Competing in their final Battle of the Books event, eighth graders Eric L., Christy C., Andi C., Paget B., and Kelsey N. took home first place honors and many good memories.
Librarian Stasha Gibbs coordinated the competition among McDonogh students and coached the finalists.
Fifth grade teacher and former librarian Nancy McFadden created the Battle of the Books competition in 2000 to inspire students to read. It has been an annual activity ever since.
