Ceremony Site is Beautified

The gray stone of Childs Memorial Terrace will be punctuated by a splash of color for spring ceremonies, thanks to Zack S. '10 and a crew of volunteers.

They planted a variety of donated shrubs and perennials to dress up the landscape around the terrace and in the surrounding glen. They also landscaped outside the Kiplinger Library.

"We really wanted to make Childs a very beautiful place, more so than it already was. This is the venue for some very important ceremonies, and an important place on campus. It should look the part," Zack said.

The new plantings include Andromeda, Boxwood, Lilac, Nandina, Camellia, Autumn Joy, Red Cardinal Flower, Big Ears, Weigela, Rhododendron, Autumn Fern, and Yew. With images of Headmaster's Day and graduation in mind, Zack said he hopes the new plantings "will bring out some of the true visual potential that Childs Memorial possesses."

Volunteers for the April 18 planting included Zack's parents, Doug '76 and Julia, his sister Allison '13, along with Tristan M. '11, Emma K. 11, Alex L. '11, Ian B. '10, Marlo A. '10, Hannah F. '10, Erica J. '11, Rob Smoot '77, Jan Kunkel, and Steve Kunkel.

Zack asked local nurseries for donations of materials. Thanks go to Green Fields Nursery, Pinehurst Nursery, Sun Nurseries, The Perennial Farm, Lowry and Company, and Lovely Manors Garden Design Center.

This effort is part of Zack's ongoing campus beautification project, which he began last year.
