City Middle Schoolers, Moms, Grandmoms Join Roots Planting

City middle schoolers involved in Baltimore SquashWise and the Middle Grades Partnership programs planted crops in the Roots garden on Saturday, May 8. Some even brought their moms and grandmoms out to enjoy a blustery morning in the garden. Both groups will help tend the crops throughout the growing season.

Many thanks for all who joined us at McDonogh Roots on Saturday May 8," wrote organizer Rebecca Brown. "The event was a great success. We accomplished so much and had a wonderful time digging in the dirt together!

"Grey clouds turned to blue skies as we planted over 1/4 acre of watermelon, cucumber and pumpkins in the community plot. At the same time, tomatoes, peppers, potatoes, squash and herbs were planted in the individual plot area."

McDonogh is a partner with both programs, which provide educational enrichment for Baltimore City school students. A McDonogh squash team member and parent volunteer with Squashwise, Upper School learning specialist Stephanie Dennis runs a Middle Grades Partnership summer program on campus for Mt. Royal Middle School students.

As a Squashwise staff member wrote: "It was one of the most fun and successful outings SquashWise has had all year. Our students and their mothers, aunts, and grandmothers all had such a nice time ... We are excited to come out again over the next few months to tend to the garden."

In addition to Rebecca Brown, McDonogh parents Scott Rifkin and Patrice Cromwell assisted the novice gardeners. Faculty members Stephanie Dennis, John Wood, and Tammy Rice helped out, as well, along with student volunteers.
