Six sophomores delivered compelling, original orations at the 30th annual Sophomore Oratory Contest in the Ceres Horn Theatre on Monday, May 10. Finalists included Taylor R., Garrett B., Garrett C., Brady E., Riana P., and Sam S. The master of ceremonies was Katie D.
Once called "the crown jewel of the spring term" by English teacher and contest director John Van Meter, the oratory competition starts in March. Students choose and research a controversial topic. Through April, they develop and convert their arguments into persuasive, five to six minute speeches.
This year's oratories addressed serious issues relating to the Internet, education, politics, prostitution, the future of McDonogh, and the struggles of being left-handed.
After careful consideration, a panel of judges, including an array of students, faculty and past winners, will announce this year’s winner and runner-up at the Headmaster’s Day Ceremony on Friday, May 14.
