On Tuesday, February 23, the Lower School met for an inspirational assembly to kick-off Mission Emmanuel, an effort spearheaded by four seniors to ship a large crate of bikes and books to Ghana to give Ghanaians the gift of mobility.
Associate Head of Lower School MaryLu Greenwood began by welcoming everyone and introducing Brendan F. and Danny B., two of the students responsible for initiating the effort. After explaining why they are collecting bicycles and children's books, Brendan asked everyone to stand and hop on one foot for a minute. He told them that as a child, Emmanuel Yeboah had to hop three miles to and from school on one leg!
Second grade teacher Nancy Lewis shared a slide show of her visit with Emmanuel in his village in Ghana. Her photographs showed images of children playing, preparing meals, and caring for siblings. Lewis also showed students photos of shipping containers, and explained how the crates are transported on large barges across the ocean. In order to visualize the size of the shipping container, children came up on stage and stood inside a taped area that was 20' long by 8' wide. The red stage curtain was brought down to 8' above the marked area to represent the height of the container.
At the conclusion of the assembly, second grade teacher Kim Mitchell announced that Lower School students would be participating in a "Move-a-thon" on Friday to raise awareness of being able-bodied. Lower School teachers Regina Karwacki, Ellie Thompson, and Craig Whiteford further energized the crowd by hopping on tricycles and racing across the stage. As they reached the finish line, the entire Lower School student body was chanting, "Believe! Believe! BELIEVE!"
The Lower School truly believes that the McDonogh family will fill the shipping container with bikes and books for Mission Emmanuel!
