Mission Emmanuel: Bikes, Books for Ghana
After hearing international hero Emmanuel Yeboah tell his story last October, four seniors decided to help Ghanaians by giving them the gift of mobility.
On Friday, February 26, students in all grades will be focused on the boys' project: Mission Emmanuel. They will begin filling a 20' shipping container on campus with donated bikes. Emmanuel Yeboah himself will be on hand to inspire the children.
Born an outcast with only one leg, Yeboah rode a bicycle across Ghana to show his fellow Ghanaians that the physically challenged are able. He changed perceptions in his native country as a result. The Oprah Winfrey-narrated documentary "Emmanuel's Gift" tells the story of Yeboah's remarkable journey.
Mission Emmanuel includes the following February 26 activities:
- collecting donated bikes and loading them into a shipping container on campus
- listening to Emmanuel Yeboah tell his story again
- staging a move-a-thon for lower schoolers to raise awareness of being able-bodied
- holding the Well, Well, Well rock concert with performances by Middle School rock bands and singers; donations and proceeds going to Mission Emmanuel
- holding an Upper School dance, also with proceeds going to Mission Emmanuel
Students are encouraging those with bikes they no longer use to contribute them to the cause. The bikes can be in any condition; Yeboah employs Ghanaians to repair them. No tricycles, please.
To donate bikes:
- Deliver them to campus between 8 and 9 a.m. on Friday, February 26.
- Bring them to the Well, Well, Well concert on February 26.
- Bring them to the container on campus before March 10.
- Drop them off at Race Pace bike shop in the St. Thomas Shopping Center before March 10.
They are also collecting children's books, which will also be shipped in the container.
The four seniors plan to follow the container to Africa in May. They will meet Yeboah in his hometown and witness the groundbreaking of a new school there.
