Irvin S. Naylor ’54, who attended McDonogh School on a scholarship for 12 years, has given his alma mater $6 million to construct a state of the art science, technology, engineering, and math building. The gift from loyal benefactor Naylor and the Naylor Family Foundation of York, Pennsylvania will bring the school closer to executing its campus master plan.
Naylor was present when McDonogh’s board president, Mike Falcone ’79, announced the gift to the school’s faculty and staff today. “I have a great respect for McDonogh,” said Naylor, who owns Snow Time, Inc., operator of Pennsylvania ski areas Whitetail and Roundtop. “Whatever success and luck I’ve had in life, I attribute it to the discipline and focus I learned at McDonogh.”
“This building, as part of the campus master plan, will have a huge impact on McDonogh School. It will provide much-needed space and modern infrastructure. I see it as being the next major step in the growth of the school,” Naylor added.
“The new science and math facility will be named the Naylor Building in gratitude to, and in honor of, Irv Naylor and his family,” said Headmaster Charlie Britton. With academic space for grades nine through 12, the Naylor Building is part of a dramatic transformation proposed for the school’s campus. Plans also call for construction of a student center, renovation of legacy buildings, and replacement of infrastructure with energy-efficient systems.
Said Britton, “It is extraordinary for a school to have such a dedicated and thoughtful benefactor. Irv has not only recognized McDonogh’s needs over the years but has also supported them very generously. Last fall he made a major gift for an indoor riding arena, which has already made a huge difference in the riding program. And, in addition to a scholarship fund that bears his family’s name, Irv has helped to fund the library, arts center, athletic center, and swimming pool, as well as two endowed teaching awards.”
“Our enormous thanks go to Irv Naylor for giving back again and again. He is deeply devoted to McDonogh, as we are to him,” said Falcone.
A boarding student, Naylor attended the school from 1942 to 1954 and was an avid rider and member of the cavalry. Naylor was also an accomplished wrestler. He went on to the University of Miami, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and an MBA. Naylor founded Cor-Box, Inc, a corrugated box company, in 1966 and sold it in 1999, the same year he purchased Snow Time, Inc.
Naylor is a board member and president of York Water Co. and the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association. He remains an advocate of horse racing and equestrian pursuits, despite a fall during the 1999 Grand National Steeplechase that left him partially paralyzed. Before that, he had been an active skier, scuba diver, tennis player, fly fisherman and fox hunter. Naylor was inducted into McDonogh’s athletic hall of fame in 1995.
Three generations of Naylors have attended McDonogh, including Irv’s son Scott ’75 and grandchildren Chet ’02 and Sarah ’07. Irv Naylor’s most recent gift to the school, for the indoor riding arena, was made in honor of Sarah Naylor.
