No Creeps Here

Deputized as the "Creep Police," third graders have sworn they will not engage in “creepish” behavior. "Sheriff" Craig Copeland made them promise to treat one another with respect.

As soon-to-be leaders of the Lower School, the Class of 2019 received inspiring lessons during Character Education Day on March 31. The entire grade focused on respect, kindness, and good sportsmanship.

"At this point, we thought this would be a good opportunity for them to grow and learn from people in their community," said third grade teacher Margaret Bitz, one of the day's organizers.

Valuable perspective came from:

  • Seventh grade English teacher Copeland, told eye-opening personal stories about witnessing creeps bullying two of his friends.
  • Eighth grader Joe G. talked about the hurtful connotations of the word "retarded." Students and teachers were moved to tears by his loving description of his younger sister, who has Down Syndrome.
  • Members of the Upper School Honor Council led the an open discussion on bullying, giving each child a heart sticker as a reminder to be kind.
  • The Eighth Grade Leadership Group conducted a session on good sportsmanship, which included a role-play exercise.
  • Upper schoolers in the GSA Club delivered a message that it's not okay to make others feel different or sad.
  • Jack MacMullan and Mickey Deegan, athletic directors past and present, offered wise words on true sportsmanship. Said MacMullan, "When we play on a team at McDonogh, we give more to our team, our coach, and our school than we get for ourselves."

Bitz was delighted with the children's responses to what they heard. "It's not going to change anything overnight," said Bitz, "but these messages will stay with them. We would like to make this an annual event for the third grade."

Added an observer, "The strength and honesty of the children in this class is truly inspiring and bodes well for the future of McDonogh. It's an amazing group."
