Students Plunge for a Good Cause

Seven Upper School students braved the frigid temperatures on Saturday, January 30 to participate in the 14th annual Polar Bear Plunge at Sandy Point State Park. The adventuresome bunch (Maddie B. '10, Catie C. '10, Emily F. '13, Will H. '11, Bailey K. '10, Brian S. '10, and Marcus T. '10) took a dip in the Chesapeake Bay to raise funds for Maryland Special Olympics. Fifteen others supported the effort with donations. A total of $1, 220 was raised. McDonogh's team of plungers was organized by Maddie B., Bailey K., and Jo B. '11 through the Upper School Special Olympics Club.

The Special Olympics Club was founded in the fall of 2009 by Tommy S. '11 and Claire S. '13. To date, the club has organized four training sessions and over 50 students have been certified to work with Special Olympics athletes throughout the year. The dedicated volunteers are currently assisting with basketball practices and games held at McDonogh on Sunday afternoons. In the spring, students will support Special Olympics track and field programs.
