A 40-foot shipping container that students filled with 328 donated bikes and more than 8,000 books is on its way from campus to Ghana. In a little more than two weeks, members of the McDonogh community and generous volunteers stuffed and packed the crate, which left campus on March 12.
The shipment is headed to Emmanuel Yeboah, the disabled man who told his inspiring story to students last October. Shortly thereafter, four seniors started the Mission Emmanuel project to give Ghanaians the gift of mobility. They rallied the community and raised money to ship the donated bikes. They also collected books to supply the school Yeboah intends to open.
The seniors and two chaperones plan to travel to Ghana in May to contribute their services to Yeboah's cause.
As one of the chaperones, class dean Nancy Love, wrote: "McDonogh's giving spirit once again demonstrates what our community can accomplish. Childhood memories with our bikes and books can now be passed on to others. You will touch the lives of many. Thanks to all who made it happen."
