Meet us at the duck pond this Friday, May 27 at 3 p.m. for the 21st annual Cardboard Boat Race.
Ten boats will compete in this year's regatta: a Crayola crayon, an ancient Egyptian boat (of cardboard, not papyrus), a muscle car, Pac Man, the Black Mamba, the Poseidon (the god, not the doomed liner), a banana split, the predator, a flying carpet, and the Mario Cart.
According to race co-director Rob Smoot, this year's builders have had to construct their boats during one of the rainiest seasons in 21 years.
"They've done a good job. It's been like the tropics around here," he said. While construction takes place under a tent, glue and paint won't dry on the industrial-grade cardboard if it's too humid.
Smoot and co-director Jen Singer credit teams with creative building techniques and artistic flourishes. They are anxious to see whether one team's unique paddle design works in the water.
Once again, Dave Harley will serve as the official race starter. The Parade of Boats will depart from the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center at approximately 2:30 p.m.
You don't want to miss it!
