CMP: After the Earthquake and Irene

You never know what can delay a construction project. Like an earthquake. Or a tropical storm.

Both hit the Baltimore area last week. The water from tropical storm Irene has caused minor delays in some Campus master plan projects.

The good news is that both artificial turf surfaces--field #5 and the lower school playground--are finished. Christened by the field hockey teams, field #5 is winning raves from players, coaches, and parents.

While Irene couldn't hurt the turf, the heavy rain made service road to the dirt stockpile area impassible. Trucks won't be moving any dirt there until the road dries.

McDonogh Road, meanwhile, is being widened. A right turn lane from McDonogh to Woods roads is under construction.

The stormwater management pond worked as planned, but it needs to be pumped out so a final layer of topsoil can be added to it. Once the pond is complete late this week or early next week, the tree stumps remaining from the demolition of the Godfrey and Shamer houses can be removed.

We will be adding asphalt to campus before we take any away. A parking lot to replace field #7--alongside the fieldhouse--as ready for paving before Irene soaked it. Now the project is delayed for a few days.

Barring other hits from Mother Nature, the following will be done in the next month:

  • A utility line will be built from the pond to the field house. This project will take about 7 or 8 weeks. Once the utility line is complete, then work can begin on the other new parking lot, where the houses were.
  • The lot on Field 7 will be finished, but it won't be accessible yet because of construction happening around it.
  • The McDonogh Road widening project will be complete except for the area where the culvert will be built under the road.
