Farewell, Turtle Friend

On a steamy hot June afternoon, five rising freshmen bid farewell to the eight-month-old terrapin that they had grown to know and love.

Accompanied by faculty members Rick Thompson and Rob Smoot, the students took a trip to Poplar Island as part of a National Aquarium program that allows schools to "adopt" a terrapin for a school year. They spent the year caring for all of the turtle's needs, and they watched her grow from the size of a quarter to about 4 inches long.

The goodbye was bittersweet, but as they watched their aquatic friend swim into the Chesapeake Bay, the students knew they had given her a jump-start on life.

After the release, the students helped plant bay grasses on the Poplar Island restoration site. The project, undertaken by the State of Maryland and the Army Corps of Engineers, will help restore habitats for birds and marine life.
