This week, McDonogh is hosting Lose the Training Wheels, an organization aiming to “teach individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two wheel bicycle and become lifelong independent riders.”
The event first came to McDonogh in 2010 thanks to the efforts of twin brothers Sam S. ’12 and Reid S. ’12 and their mother Sue Ann. Sam and Reid recalled how difficult it was to teach their own autistic brother to ride a bicycle and how they had to travel to a camp that would teach him to ride. The goal, according to Sam, was to bring such a camp closer to home, making it easier for other individuals with disabilities and for their families.
The event at McDonogh has approximately 44 volunteers teaching the 38 signed up participants. Volunteers can sign up for entire days or two-hour shifts. Parents can stay and watch as their children develop bike riding skills. Throughout the week, the kids’ balance improves and by the end of the week, they are often ready to ride two wheel bicycles.
Hannah P. ’12, who volunteered for two hours each day of the camp, remarked, “it’s so much fun working with the kids and seeing the huge smiles on their faces when they’re riding the bikes. Being a volunteer is so rewarding.”
