The annual Battle of the Books challenged middle schoolers from McDonogh and seven other independent schools in a Jeopardy-style competition at Glenelg Country School on Wednesday, May 11. McDonogh sent four teams, one representing each grade level.
Battle of the Books rewards students with an exciting “It’s Academic” style quiz show format. The host asks questions and team members huddle together and confer before presenting their answers. In the end, the students who remember the tiniest details prevail.
McDonogh’s eighth grade team of Madison D., Tori L., Harini R., and Sara S., who have battled together for four years, brought home second place honors.
The seventh grade team of Sam A., Jack D., Preston R., and Nique Y. fought hard for fourth place, while the sixth grade team of Peyton B., Yakov F., Joe D., and Mohoit P. came in a valiant sixth place.
Battling for the first time, fifth graders Alexis H., Lauren S., Jessica T., and Alexander Z. finished in first place.
Students are given a Battle of the Books extracurricular reading list at the beginning of the school year. In the spring, McDonogh conducts its own Battle of the Books classroom competition to determine who will represent the school at the championships.
Librarians Stasha Gibbs and Sara Beach coordinated the competition among McDonogh students and coached the participants.
Fifth grade teacher and former librarian Nancy McFadden created the Battle of the Books competition in 2000 to inspire students to read. It has been an annual activity ever since.
