National Honor for Equestrian Jacob P. '13

Equestrian Jacob P. has been nominated by the United States Hunter/Jumper Association for the U.S. Equestrian Foundation's 2011 Youth Sportsman of the Year Award.

This award is the highest youth honor awarded by the United States Hunter/Jumper Association, which governs Hunter/Jumper shows throughout the nation.

Applicants for this award were chosen from among 14,000 junior USHJA event participants. An elite committee of those in the horse industry chose Jacob as the winner.

Said McDonogh riding's Miranda Kolbe, "We are extremely proud of Jacob for earning the highest honor given by the United States Hunter/Jumper Assocation. His trainers and his peers are very excited to see what the future will bring for this talented young man."

A member of McDonogh's riding program since Lower School, Jacob has won numerous honors in competition. The Youth Sportsman of the Year nomination reflects his commitment to the sport as well as his outstanding performance in the riding ring.

Jacob will receive leadership training at the USHJA annual career workshop, a commemorative trophy, and a $500 educational grant. The winner will be announced by the USHJA at a special dinner in New Orleans in December.

"Your application, resume and letters of recommendation displayed the type of desirable leadership characteristics we value at USHJA," officials wrote to Jacob.

The primary goal of the USEF Youth Sportsman’s Award is to identify potential future leaders in the equine industry, and to recognize youth for their achievements.

Applicants should demonstrate an ongoing commitment to the promotion of equestrian sport, serve as a positive role model for their peers, be involved in community activities, and exhibit good sportsmanship. Applicants may participate at any level of competition, including local, regional or national events. Along with demonstrating all of these attributes, Jacob also had to submit one essay and three recommendations from people both inside and outside of the horse world.
