Stewart Senior Honors Recital: "Wow"

From the minute Director of the Arts Kevin Costa introduced the 18th annual Stewart Senior Honors Recital, the audience was in for a treat. Four graduating seniors shared their artistic passions and considerable talents: pianist Erin Fitzhugh, cellist Alessandra Garvin, vocalist Jamie Levine, and actor Amy Rifkin.

Versatile musician Erin Fitzhugh demonstrated mastery of several complex pieces for classical piano, as well as an Elton John medley. Inspired by her grandfather, Erin took up the piano at age 6. She has trained extensively in jazz and classical piano and plans to study music at Miami University of Ohio. Like all the recitalists, Erin has appeared often on the McDonogh stage. She is a dancer, choreographer, and singer as well as a pianist.

Alessandra Garvin stunned the audience with her orchestra-quality performances, solo and accompanied by professional musicians including her mother, classical pianist and teacher Laura Garvin. Alessandra, who began taking music lessons at Peabody Prep when she was 3, will attend the University of Michigan to study cello performance and marine biology.

Jamie Levine showcased her gifts as an classical vocalist. She chose a repertoire of operatic favorites, classical pieces, and art songs. Watching her with pride was her voice teacher, Toni Stefano, who began training Jamie in third grade. Jamie has been admitted into the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami.

Amy Rifkin again revealed her acting talent, this time as a solo and small-ensemble performer. She delighted the audience with scenes from Shakespeare"s "Measure for Measure," Elaine May's "The Way of All Fish", and Daniel Orozco's "Orientation." Amy, who caught the acting bug in McDonogh's summer program, Young Actor's Theatre, and pursued it with skill and passion since entering McDonogh as a freshman. She plans to attend the College of William and Mary, where she will study veterinary sciences and continue acting.

In the audience was one very special guest--Marsh Anders, who retired this spring after 47 years teaching music at McDonogh. The professional pianist, 89, had planned to prepare and accompany Erin Fitzhugh until a health issue prevented him from doing so. Erin began studying jazz piano with Marsh when she was a sophomore. Student and teacher embraced after the concert, Marsh from his wheelchair.

The annual Stewart Seniors Honors recital is lovingly and generously supported by the Drs. James and Brenda Stewart and their daughter, Caroline Stewart Oberle '93.

The Stewart family established the award in the spring of 1993 in recognition of and appreciation for McDonogh's outstanding dance, theater, and music programs.

Since the inaugural event in 1994, 49 Stewart recitalists have performed. A number have continued their education in the arts, enrolling in some of the country's most selective programs. Several are professional performers today.
