Fabric creations by national quilt artists Dr. Joan Gaither and Janet Waters will be on display Thursday, October 20 through Monday, December 12 in The Tuttle Gallery.
All are welcome to an opening reception Thursday, October 27 from 4 to 6 p.m. to meet the artists. Their colorful, imaginative art work uses fabric to construct works inspired by social, family, personal, and cultural history.
Dr. Gaither expresses herself in mixed media, fibers, and photographic images that allow close scrutiny of surfaces and metaphors for personal meaning. As Dr. Gaither's quilts began to take shape, deeply buried memories became "unlayered" in fiber and mixed media to address issues of celebration, identity, protection, racism, and survival. Her process is reflective and requires interaction with the selections of fiber type, texture, color, and objects of embellishment that then put gold threads of hope and celebration into her personal narrative art works.
Since 1994, Waters has been exhibiting and selling her artwork in area galleries, museums, and art festivals. She has also been published in a glorious art quilt book, Spirit of the Cloth, and featured in a Maryland Public Television special showcasing Maryland quilters. Most recently, she was featured in articles in The Maryland Life and The Urbanite magazines.
The Tuttle Gallery, located in the Lyle Building, provides a forum for artists to show their work to both the school community and the public at large. The Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call 410-998-3511 for more information.
