Eighth Grader Wins Geography Bee

Twenty-four students competed in the finals of the annual Middle School National Geographic Geography Bee in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, January 6. Seventh grade social studies teachers Matt Goode and Craig Copeland served as masters of ceremonies as the entire middle school cheered on their classmates.

After nine rounds of questions, it came down to sixth grader Daniel C. and eighth grader Matt M. Matt was declared the champion after he correctly answered “Germany” for the question: “Cologne Cathedral, the largest Gothic church in northern Europe, is located in the Rhineland region of what country?”

The contestants secured a spot on stage by first becoming the champion in their social studies class. For more than an hour, the finalists were quizzed on their knowledge of U.S., world, scientific, and current events geography. The questions became more difficult with each round.

Each year, more than 6,000,000 middle school students nationwide participate in the annual Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.

Matt will take a written test to determine if he qualifies to compete at the state level in the spring. A victory at the state level would send him to the National Geography Bee finals held in Washington, D.C. in May.
