Twenty-six students from the Middle School Honors Choir spent four enchanted days in Walt Disney World to learn from professional Broadway choreographers and directors and to have a little pre-spring break fun.
On Sunday, March 4, students attended an intensive 2½-hour “Disney Broadway Magic” session and worked with a choreographer and a director. They learned the song “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and accompanying scene from the Broadway musical Mary Poppins.
“I was very impressed with the way the director casted the students. Even students who did not have a speaking part for this scene were given a background about their character. This allowed each student to bring that character to life during the performance,” says Suzi Eldridge, middle school choral director.
“In the workshop I learned that singing, acting, and dancing all at the same time is really hard,” says eighth grader Bri H. “I was also surprised that Broadway show performers learn dances and songs in only 24 hours.”
A highlight for the choir was their performance in Downtown Disney on Monday, featuring renditions of “Dream,” “Make Them Hear You,” “You Can't Stop the Beat,” “Sing,” “When You Believe,” “Breathe,” and “Happily Ever After.” The audience of hundreds was overwhelmingly supportive of the choir. “Being on stage in Disney and having such a large audience cheering for us was amazing,” says eighth grader Kayla H.
Before the group returned home on Tuesday, students attended a “Disney Sings” workshop, which focused on how to effectively use their voices for song and sound in the recording industry. The students learned the German word sprechstimme, which is a combination of speaking and singing with changes in pitch. Students used this technique when they recorded their own sound effects to complement The Lion King songs “Can you Feel the Love Tonight” and “Circle of Life.”
While students came home exhausted from attending the workshops and bonding in the Disney parks, they also came home with new skills. Suzi couldn’t be more proud of how hard her students worked, “The performance of the students was outstanding. The workshops transformed this group of middle school students into a group of professional performers in a matter of days.”
