On January 24, former Baltimore Colt great and motivational speaker Joe Ehrmann shared his philosophy on the value of relationships and the commitment to making a difference in the world with the McDonogh Community. One week later, students, parents, faculty, and staff are still talking about his inspiring visit.
An ordained minister, Ehrmann started the day with messages of hope for members of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes group. He spoke to students about individual responsibility, personal growth, and how his faith has always guided him, especially during times when his character was being tested. Garrett B. ’12 was grateful to spend time with Ehrmann in a small group setting, “He gave us great examples from biblical stories and his own experiences about the importance of creating your own identity and not getting carried away with what others think of you. Claire S. ’13 added, “Mr Ehrmann emphasized that we can come to school and just show up or we can come to school to make a difference.”
Later in the morning, Ehrmann received a standing ovation from students and faculty at an Upper School assembly. The author of Inside Out Coaching: How Sports Can Transform Lives, Erhmann encouraged students to understand that all lasting and meaningful change begins on the inside and works its way out. He posed many questions. Who defines you? Who do you stand with? He also asked students to think about what really matters and how they can start living the legacy that they desire.
In the evening, Erhmann captivated a packed house of parents and students in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre. He shared his belief that today’s social problems are the result of misconceptions regarding masculinity and femininity that are accentuated by the media. He also emphasized that adults need to put the needs of kids ahead of their own.
At the end of the day, Erhmann’s prevailing message to the McDonogh community: be transformational and leave the world a better place.
