Zahra K. ’17 was the eighth grade grand prize winner in the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth (CTY) Race and Politics Essay Contest held earlier this winter. More than 120 Baltimore-area students in grades 6 through 8 entered the competition.
The essay prompt was, “How do ideas about race affect life in your community? If you could speak to the President of the United States, what would you ask him to do about these issues?” Zahra wrote about the way in which Muslims are stereotyped as terrorists and how she would like to see the President promote efforts to change the negative images that exist today.
Judged by a panel of professionals from CTY, the entries were required to be 400 to 700 words in length and be the student’s original work. Zahra was recognized during a special workshop at City Hall. She also received an Amazon Kindle Fire tablet computer for her accomplishment.
