Finalists Named in National Scholarship Programs

Seven McDonogh seniors—Bruno B., Tess K., Benjamin L., Christian N., Phillip N., Elizabeth O., and Rachel P.— have been designated as finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program, and Jasmine P. ’13 was selected as a finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program.

The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Of the 1.5 million entrants, approximately 16,000 semifinalists were named in September and 15,000 of these students were chosen as finalists. Beginning in March, the NMSC will select 8,400 as Merit Scholarship winners.

The National Achievement Scholarship Program, which is also conducted by the NMSC, is an academic competition established in 1964 to provide recognition for outstanding African American high school students. Of the more than 160,000 students who currently enter the National Achievement Program each year, approximately, 1,300 qualify as finalists. In late February, about 800 finalists will be selected to receive a National Achievement Scholarship.
