Honors for Master Teacher Wright Abbot

During a faculty and staff meeting on February 11, Headmaster Charlie Britton surprised Upper School English teacher Wright Abbot by naming him the third recipient of the Major Louis E. "Doc" Lamborn Master Teaching Chair. The chair was established in 2007 to recognize excellent teachers who have been with the school for 15 or more years and have demonstrated a commitment to the McDonogh community.

The unsuspecting award winner was sitting with colleagues in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre as Britton began to reveal his identity. He said, "This treasured member of the faculty is valued for his deep intellect, his extraordinary love of McDonogh, and for his wisdom.”

During the thoughtful tribute, the Headmaster referred to the 28-year veteran faculty member as the “go to guy” whenever there is a big job to be done. Britton reminded the audience that this has included jobs such as chairing the committees to hire a new Headmaster and Head of the Upper School and co-chairing the school’s Accreditation Steering Committee.

Referring to the recipient’s work in the classroom, Britton said, “At first, you might hear a freshman groan about his grading – ‘can anyone get an A?’ -- but these same students quickly speak of him with deep admiration. So clear is his penetrating knowledge of literature -- and, more importantly, so clear is his love for it. Whether the topic is modern poetry, Shakespeare, or his beloved Richard Russo, our colleague delights in language and ideas.”

When Britton finally named the recipient as Wright Abbot, the audience stood and cheered. A stunned and honored Abbot made his way to the stage, where his wife, Cynthia Cox, and children, Will '09 and Catherine '11, were waiting to congratulate him.

Named after longtime Headmaster Doc Lamborn, a visionary leader during his 26-year tenure from 1926-1952, the award is McDonogh’s first and only endowed chair for a master teacher. It is made possible by the generous gifts of 13 alumni from the classes of 1943 to 1957.

Endowed chairs enrich McDonogh's academic community. The school has established six endowed faculty chairs since 1988. Each award, made for a period of three years, includes an annual stipend for the recipient.
