McDonogh Singers Perform at Disney
The McDonogh Singers made the leap from the stage in the Horn Theatre to the stage at Walt Disney World, where the group of 20 Middle School students, under the direction of Suzanne Eldridge, spent a long weekend, March 1-4, performing, attending workshops, and enjoying the excitement of the Magic Kingdom.
During their stay, the McDonogh Singers participated in two workshops where they experienced the exhilaration — and the demands — of being professional performers, and even recorded a song from The Lion King soundtrack in a fast-paced recording studio environment. The Broadway Magic workshop blended Disney magic with the rigor of live musical theater. Students performed the opening number from Beauty and the Beast and learned about the elements required to bring a show together, including music, staging, costuming, and props.
Among the other highlights of the trip was the opportunity to perform for a boisterous crowd in Downtown Disney and the chance for one McDonogh student to participate in Disney’s American Idol Experience. After a true audition, McDonogh eighth grader Rose C. was invited to continue onto a second round. That audition advanced her to the next level, where she sang before an audience of 500. While Rose didn’t make it to the finals, she felt like a star when she was swarmed by a group of little girls wearing princess dresses.
According to Eldridge, in addition to everything the students learned on-stage and behind-the-scenes, the group also picked up a few life lessons, including the importance of flexibility when traveling and that it takes persistence to land a job in the park.
