Merritt Livermore '91 Appointed Head of Upper School

Dear Members of the McDonogh Community,

I am delighted to announce that after conducting a comprehensive, nationwide search, Merritt Livermore '91 has accepted our offer to be McDonogh's next Head of Upper School. As many of you know, Merritt has brought enormous energy and an impressive work ethic to all of the roles she has held at McDonogh since returning to her alma mater in 1999.

Merritt began her McDonogh career in the Upper School, where she has experience as a history teacher, technology coordinator, and Sophomore Class Dean. She has spent the last nine years helping to run the Middle School as both Dean of Students and Associate Head. Merritt's great work as Co-Chair of the Program Committee during the AIMS Accreditation process and her forward-thinking work as Co-Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee have given her in-depth knowledge of K-12 curricular issues, placing her in a unique position to help facilitate conversations between divisions and between departments to realize emerging goals. Additionally, since 2007, Merritt has spent summers serving as a Workshop Leader with Independent School Management, training teachers and administrators of other independent schools.

Merritt graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education from University of Maryland, College Park, and she earned her Master of Science Degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Professional Studies in Business and Education. Prior to joining the faculty at McDonogh, Merritt spent four years teaching in the Prince George's County Public Schools System.

The Search Committee, under the leadership of Upper School English teacher Wright Abbot, took all of these factors into account, but was also impressed by the depth of Merritt's love for the school. In fact, Wright shared, "All of us on the committee recognized that no one we could have hired would bring more passion and dedication to the job than Merritt will."

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wright and the members of the Search Committee for their thoughtful and diligent work during the past few months. I would also like to once again commend Head of Upper School Kirsten Adams for her outstanding leadership during the past six years and wish her the very best in her new role as Head of School at St. Stephen's & St. Agnes in Virginia. It is an exciting and well-deserved career opportunity for her.

Merritt will begin her tenure as Head of Upper School on July 1, 2014. Please join me in celebrating her new role within the McDonogh community.

Sincerely,

Charles W. Britton
Headmaster
