Eleonore E. Wins MIAA Squash Championship

Sophomore Eleonore E. made history on Tuesday, February 18, when she became McDonogh’s first female athlete to win a MIAA championship. The MIAA, formed in 1994, is the Baltimore area independent school athletic league in which boys compete. The girls’ counterpart is the IAAM.

Eleonore is one of two girls who compete on McDonogh’s varsity co-ed squash team. Following the team competitions at the end of the high school squash season, players are ranked and compete against each other for the MIAA individual championship title. Eleonore was ranked #3 and slotted to compete against the #1 player, a junior from Gilman.

The championship match took five very close games to determine the winner; and Eleonore seemed unflappable as she returned seemingly impossible-to-reach shots. In the end, she outscored her opponent by only a couple points.
