Congratulations to two McDonogh seniors, Toby H. and Geordie E., who were named The Baltimore Sun's February 4 "Athletes of the Week."
According to The Sun, Toby H. a senior captain of the wrestling team at 152 pounds, went 3-0 last week with two pins to help the No. 1 Eagles clinch the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association dual meet championship. Toby opened the week with a first-period pin of his John Carroll opponent on Tuesday as the Eagles defeated the No. 3 Patriots, 40-29. On Thursday, he pinned his Archbishop Spalding opponent in 4:26 as the Eagles claimed a 60-15 win over the then-No. 14 (now No. 12) Cavaliers. In Friday's showdown against No. 2 Mount St. Joseph to determine the MIAA dual meet champion, Toby moved up to the 160-pound class and earned a 10-4 decision over the Gaels as the Eagles came away with a 44-25 win. Set to wrestle at the University of Maryland, Toby is 32-5 this season with nine pins and has 153 career wins covering four varsity seasons.
On the girls' side, Geordie E. broke league records and earned automatic All-America status in two individual events at the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference swimming championships Saturday at McDonogh. In the 200-yard individual medley, she broke her own league mark, winning by almost six seconds in 2 minutes, 1.69 seconds. In the 100 backstroke, Geordie broke the record by 1.83 seconds, finishing in 55.01 seconds. She earned a third gold medal, joined by Amanda C., Brindi G., and Avery H. to win the 200-medley relay.
