Excitement was at an all-time high throughout the fall 2021 sports season. Our teams were happy to be back on the fields and courts, and in the pool and the ring, with enthusiastic fans cheering them on to victory. Congratulations to all of our fall athletes.
This year, McDonogh's girls did exceptionally well against teams in the IAAM league and earned three championship titles.
Girls Tennis
After an undefeated season, the Eagles earned their first A Conference championship crown since 2014 defeating players from Notre Dame Preparatory School and St. Paul's School for Girls. According to a story on the IAAM website, the victory was credited to a number of singles and doubles players on the team. "It was just the greatest bunch of girls who really came together as a team," [Coach Terry] Solins said.
Girls Cross Country
In the IAAM championship meet at the Baltimore County Agricultural Center in Cockeysville, the Eagles flew past two-time defending champion Maryvale and Notre Dame Prep to win the A Conference title for the first time since 2014. Following an undefeated season, four McDonogh runners finished in the top eight at the championships. In an IAAM website story, Coach Phil Turner said, “They were just really, really hungry. It was all about the team and the girls ran their hearts out. I’m happy it all came together.”
Varsity Girls Soccer
After a scoreless game that went into overtime, the Eagles defeated Archbishop Spalding 1-0 to earn them the IAAM A Conference soccer championship—a title they have held for seven of the last eight seasons. The exception was in 2020 when McDonogh did not play due to the pandemic. The 2021 team, which only had three returning starters, included a number of freshmen and sophomores. Looking back at the season, Coach Harry Canellakis told an IAAM reporter, "If you look at the beginning of the season, we were ranked seventh in the newspaper...we lost our first two scrimmages, we didn’t have a lot of success in the early season. We sorted things out..the fact we were able to grow so much during the season makes this very very special.”
