There are many people at McDonogh whose roles behind the scenes are essential to the success of the School. While they often are not seen, their presence is felt. One such person, Ann Fleming, was recognized at the opening faculty and staff meeting of the 2024-2025 school year on Monday, August 19 when she was named the recipient of the John T. Grega Chair.
The chair, one of 12 at McDonogh, was established in 2003 by alumnus Vernon Wright ’61 and his family and recognizes former faculty member John Grega for his role as the moral and spiritual leader of the McDonogh Family for many years.
In announcing Fleming, the Senior Director of Philanthropy for Advancement Services, as the recipient of the award, Head of School Dave Farace ’87 described her job — to manage all the data that the Department of Philanthropy depends upon to do its crucial work, maintaining current and precise records on alumni, donors, parents, grandparents, and families new to the community. He said, “Beyond her superb technical skills, our honoree is described as being one of the ‘thought leaders’ in her department.”
He added, that the energy behind Fleming’s efforts comes from her desire to serve the community she cherishes so deeply. “She firmly believes in the ‘leave it better than you found it’ approach to work,” Farace said.
In addition to her work in the philanthropy office for more than 29 years, Fleming was recognized for going above and beyond her official responsibilities by involving herself in other aspects of school life. She served for several years as the liaison to the McDonogh Parent Association (MPA) and is a versatile and valuable volunteer theater crew member selling tickets, operating the light board, and running the backstage area, making sure that everyone is safe. “She doesn’t freeze or panic in an emergency,” Farace noted.
With her family, Vernon Wright, and John Grega in attendance, Fleming graciously accepted the award in front of the crowd of faculty and staff who were thrilled on her behalf.
