Convocation Ceremony Marks Start of New School Year

The entire School community gathered at Childs Memorial Terrace on Wednesday, August 28 for McDonogh’s Opening Convocation ceremony. In keeping with tradition, the Class of 2025 joined hands with prefirst and first graders for the walk down Chapel Hill — the last time the seniors will do so before Commencement in June.

After the benediction in which Dr. Kevin Costa focused on love, Head of School Dave Farace '87 offered remarks. He spoke about the connection between joy, curiosity, and relationships, saying, "Curiosity is the heartbeat of our joyful teaching and learning environment. It is the driving force behind the academic excellence we strive for, the opportunities we seize, and the relationships we build. It is curiosity that leads us to ask questions, explore new ideas, and push the boundaries of what we know. It fuels our desire to learn and grow, both as individuals and as a community."

Student speakers Josh Brown ‘25 and Will O. '29 challenged their peers in the Upper and Middle Schools to embrace all that McDonogh has to offer and to try new experiences. Next, lower schoolers Zara S. '37 and Harper T. '37 gave a warm welcome to the new year. The ceremony concluded with the ringing of a school bell by McDonogh’s longest-tenured faculty member Jon Aaron '72 to officially open the 2024-2025 school year.
