"Grassroots" Effort to Save the Bay

Students in Rob Smoot's Chesapeake Bay class have begun growing grass. And not just any kind of grass. They're cultivating sago pondweed, aquatic vegetation that will be transplanted in the spring to the Chesapeake Bay. Their effort is part of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Bay Grasses in Classes ecosystem restoration project. McDonogh has been a project participant since 2000. Shown here is a sample of McDonogh's 2001 harvest.
