“I feel kind for making baskets for the poor,” wrote a first grader in Mary Catherine Irving’s class yesterday. He and his classmates did something nice for children served by the House of Ruth and My Sister’s Place. They made 72 baskets full of art supplies, most of which were bought with money the children earned themselves from doing extra chores at home.
The students formed an assembly line, selecting from crayons, markers, pencils, stickers and sticker books, pads, and other goodies stacked on their desks. Once they had filled all the tubs, they made sure each contained a suitable array of supplies. Parent volunteers were on hand to wrap the baskets as gifts. The first graders then carried the wrapped tubs to their teacher’s car.
When they were all finished, Mrs. Irving asked the students to write how they felt about what they had just done. “I feel proud because I did a lot of work and somebody will be happy,” reported one.
To raise money for the art supplies, the children made beds, watched younger siblings, took out the trash, sorted socks, and carried logs.
Mary Catherine Irving made it a goal this year to involve her students in helping those less fortunate than themselves. In addition to the art basket project, Mrs. Irving’s students exchange letters and handmade gifts with their counterparts at McDonogh #26 in Gretna, Louisiana.
