On Friday, October 12, the Horn Theatre was the site of a master class on songwriting and the music business given by Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman of Aztec Two-Step; the two played later that night for the McDonogh community. The duo, veteran folk-rockers whose careers have spanned nearly four decades, discussed their songs and the personal experiences that have inspired them. After performing and examining a couple of their more popular pieces, the focus turned to several upper school students–Alivia P., Greg B., Adam G., and Molly J.–who performed their original songs for feedback and constructive advice from Aztec Two-Step. At one point, the group of students attending this class witnessed musical arranging in action when Greg B. accompanied a song that Molly J. is still writing!
The session concluded with Neal Shulman giving the history of popular music in the 20th century. While encouraging students to pursue their current musical interests, he also urged them to explore the rich tradition of popular music from the likes of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, George Gershwin, and Stephen Foster.
