Batting a Thousand with the Orioles

The former major leaguers have provided detailed perspective of what it was like to be an Oriole in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. They’ve spoken candidly of the daily pressures, the team camaraderie, and the privilege of playing professional baseball even though the jobs paid much less then than they do today. “They all have good stories to tell,” said Dane R. ’03. John Grega began thinking about such an oral history project last summer when he attended the Society for American Baseball Research convention in Boston. He joined SABR’s oral history committee to learn more. Later, with help from secretary to the headmaster Virginia Olcerst, he mailed thirty requests for interviews to Orioles living in the area. Eight responded. Said Ben N. ’03, whose player interview is with Brooks Robinson, “I didn’t think it would be this cool.”
