Big Splash for New Pool

The Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. Aquatic Center opened yesterday with much fanfare, including the ceremonial pouring of water from the old pool into the new.

Prior to the boys swim team's first meet of the season, swimmers, donors, and spectators gathered to celebrate the new, eight-lane, 50-meter pool, one of only two such indoor facilities in a K-12 independent school east of the Mississippi.

As dozens of small rubber ducks floated in the water in front of them, Headmaster Bo Dixon, Aquatics Director Scott Ward, and team captains thanked all those responsible for the swimmers' dream facility.

They paid special tribute to major benefactor Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. '48, whose lead gift made the long-awaited project possible. The girls' team captains gave Rosenberg a personalized expression of gratitude--mounted, framed McDonogh swim caps signed by the entire team.

Scott Ward remembered the man who started interscholastic swimming at McDonogh in 1954, esteemed teacher-coach Lou Martin. Martin's widow, Anna, was on hand to accept thanks for her support of the project. The scoreboard is aptly named in Lou Martin's memory.

Then, on Ward's count of four, senior swimmers poured pitchers of water he had saved from the old pool (circa 1954) before it was demolished last fall.

Athletic Director Mickey Deegan explained the ceremony's finale by reciting this clever poem by Head of Lower School Noreen Lidston:

Twas the night before swimming
and all through our school
excitement was building
about our new pool.

It was time for a party
for all who took part in
our swimming tradition
especially Lou Martin.

But how best to commingle
the present and past?
How do we build spirit
and memories that last?

“I know!” cried a swimmer,
“Here’s a plan that will go;
“we’ll mix up some old
and some new H-two-O!”

“I’ve got souvenir water
from our classic old pool
where hundreds of athletes
swam hard for our school.”

“We’ll pour it in this pool
so we all can feel proud
of our coaches and swimmers
and fans who cheered loud.”

“On Rosenberg! Simmers!
On Johnston and Monk!
On Ward and on Dixon!
Who else can we dunk?”

Then Aquaman shouted,
“On my count of four,
let’s stop all this chatter!
Get ready to pour!”

And we heard him exclaim
As he swam out of sight
“Happy split times to all!
There’ll be practice tonight
