Nobody beats McDonogh in school spirit.
Last week’s pep rallies and spirit parades gave Eagle fans multiple opportunities to demonstrate their school pride. And did they ever, as a prelude to the 91st annual McDonogh-Gilman football game on Saturday, November 10.
On Friday afternoon, November 9, parade grand master Dave Harley, bagpiper Adam G. ’10, and the student-faculty drum corps led the classic, double self-enveloping march from MacHamer Road to the Rollins-Luetkemeyer Athletic Center.
The prefirsters, ferried in golf carts driven by upper schoolers, folded in next. Right behind them were the lower, middle and upper schoolers, all clad in school colors from hats to shoes.
The impressive display of orange and black continued in the athletic center, where there were plenty of cheers for the football team and words of encouragement from Headmaster Charlie Britton.
Alumni, parents, and teachers joined the act Friday evening at the biennial Orange and Black Bull Roast in Memorial Field House.
The celebrations continued on Saturday. Inside the field house, the Alumni Association hosted a brunch to honor 12 new inductees to the Athletic Hall of Fame and four Distinguished Service Award recipients. Outside, students and parents gathered for a pre-game cookout.
Just before game time, the Morgan State University Marching Band got Spirit Parade #2 going from the front of Allan Building to the John McDonogh Stadium. Right behind the guest musicians, parade grand master Harley led cheering Eagle fans, many clapping thunder sticks, to the stadium en masse.
For the second year, the McDonogh contingent arrived at the game in dramatic, colorful, and spirited fashion. Gilman fans tried, but could not match this display.
The football teams gave fans a great game to watch, trading touchdowns until Gilman pulled ahead in the end. Morgan State put on a dazzling halftime show to delight the whole crowd.
The football trophy may be back on Roland Avenue, but Eagle fans keep the prize for spirit right here on McDonogh Road.
