In the making for two years, the original musical, Chesapeake Dream, debuted in Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Friday, April 21, with additional performances throughout the week on Saturday, April 22, Monday, April 24 and Tuesday, April 25. The colorful cast of bay critters and middle school students entertained crowded audiences with 20 original songs, hip choreography, and a thought provoking message about taking action to save the Chesapeake Bay.
Chesapeake Dream is the brainchild of English teacher and Director Jon Aaron, who was inspired to create the musical from Tom Horton’s book, Bay Country, and annual field trips with his eighth grade students to Chesapeake Bay Foundation sites.
Aaron’s creative team included many McDonogh faculty members, students and alumni. The Chesapeake Dream book was co-written by Aaron and McDonogh alumnus, Michael Friedman. The lyrics were written by Aaron, with music by faculty members Steve Martel and Don New, and alumni Andrew Finkelstein, Chris Levitt, Lindsay Young, and Jenn Wasner. “It was a collaborative effort, and the creative process was evolving right down to opening night, “ said Aaron.
The cast and crew were pleased to share the show’s powerful message with visiting students from the Living Classroom Foundation’s Crossroads School, Gibson Island Country Day School, Garrison Forest School, and Roland Park Country School during Monday’s performance. Chesapeake Dream was a perfect field trip because it highlights the bay’s serious health issues and motivates today’s generation of kids to act now to save it.
Everyone who tuned in for Chesapeake Dream experienced a wild, marsh muckin’ adventure “Down by the Bay!” After the actors took their final bows, Head of Middle School Darren Ford surprised Jon Aaron with a congratulatory citation from Maryland Governor Robert Ehrlich.
