Judges, The Envelope Please: Mr. G.Q. 2007 is Crowned

The sixth annual Mr. G.Q. Contest ended in the crowning of senior Ben M. on Saturday, April 21. Ben dazzled the audience in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre with an unusual display of talent.

While acting the part of John Basedow of infomercial fame, Ben posed to flex his muscles and sketched his own torso (quite well) at the same time. His comedic performance earned him major points from the faculty judges.

Twelve senior boys competed for the coveted title, which includes bragging rights and the opportunity to direct event proceeds to a favorite charity.

Contestants appeared first in casual attire accompanied by their escorts. The crowd went wild.

The guys really shined in the talent portion that came next. Colby stood out with a variation on a number from the musical Stomp. Using everyday objects like pots, pans, and hubcaps as percussion instruments, Colby gave a choreographed, rhythmic performance.

Jeremy also impressed with his rendition of a popular Usher song, blending guitar, electronic playback, rap, and vocals.

Neil was downright hilarious as a cheesy Frank Sinatra imitator who transforms into an Indian rap artist.

Skilled vocalist Terrell serenaded his escort, Lauren, with a John Legend song, while Chris danced a medley from High School Musical.

After the contestants impressed all with their talents and strutted their stuff in formal wear, the judges chose five semi-finalists: Neil P., Colby L., Jeremy B., Terrell W., and Ben. Then each semi-finalist answered a question pulled at random from a hat.

Creatively costumed judges—Headmaster Bo Dixon, teacher Mara Daniel, and deans Libet Ottinger and Bill Seal—deliberated briefly before submitting their final decision.

Emcee Emily Z., who organized the competition almost single-handedly, announced the winners: Second runner-up, Terrell; first runner-up, Neil; and Ben. As the 2007 Mr. G.Q., Ben designated $1,200 event proceeds to the Cancer Research and Prevention Foundation.

Thanks go to Emily for her tireless work on the event, Rutland Beard Florist for providing the flowers, and After Hours for the contestants’ tuxes.
