Senior art student Danny G. exceeded his goal of raising $1000 for sister school McDonogh 26 in Gretna, Louisiana during a silent art auction in the lobby of Ceres M. Horn Theatre on Wednesday, April 18. The event, which featured approximately 100 pieces of art contributed by students, faculty, and other professional artists, raised over $3000.
Danny came up with the concept for the art auction last year after visiting New Orleans and witnessing firsthand the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. A passionate photographer, it was a photograph that he took of a tattered Dr. Seuss book, "The Cat Comes Back," lying in the backyard of an abandoned house that moved him to action.
"I was immediately struck by the symbolism of the book in the photo," said Danny. "The Cat Comes Back" is about a house that is destroyed and in the end is put back together. "As I looked at the ruined house before me, I knew that I had to do something to help Katrina victims put their lives back together. It is not often in life that we get strong symbols like that," he added.
Danny's passion for art led him to the silent art auction idea, which was fully supported by the art department.
"I decided to donate the proceeds to McDonogh 26 because I believe that the area will have a better chance of recovering if the children are educated," said Danny. He and nine other McDonogh students visited the school during spring break.
The auction was so successful that plans are in the works to make it an annual event.
