To open the ceremony, Headmaster Bo Dixon amused the Class of 2008 with some of his favorite "Yogi-isms," the thought-provoking expressions of baseball great Yogi Berra. Among the headmaster's favorites: "When you come to a fork in the road, take it," and "You can observe a lot by watching."
Student speakers Camille and Alex C. then addressed the crowd. After reflecting on where the class has been, Alex referred to one of school founder John McDonogh's Rules for Living: Time is gold. "We have many memories behind us and so much more gold to find," Alex said.
In describing where the class is headed, Camille likened her group to a puzzle. "Our friendships serve as glue to keep the puzzle together. ... We will undoubtedly add new pieces to the puzzle as we finish our McDonogh years. Our Middle School picture is now complete."
For nine students, there was an extra scene to add. They received year-end awards, which recognized them for character, sense of humor, academic achievement, and effort.
Every member of the Class of 2008 processed across the terrace to accept a certificate of promotion from Head of Middle School Darren Ford and a congratulatory handshake from Headmaster Bo Dixon.
The Class of 2008 received a standing ovation from their teachers and the audience. Even the abundant cicadas couldn't compete with that happy noise.
