Aquatic Director Scott Ward got the call at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 17: use and occupancy permit issued. The newly constructed 50-meter pool in the Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. Aquatic Center can open right away.
A little more than an hour later, the first swimmers took the plunge. Eight members of the Middle School water polo team jumped in and swam across the eight-lane pool. "It's warm!" one exclaimed.
Certainly warmer than the pool they thought they'd be using. Team members were ready to board the bus for an off-site, outdoor practice pool when coach Dan Herring called them inside.
Likewise, varsity coach Scott Ward was preparing to conduct an outdoor water polo practice in the cool, driving rain. "I was rehearsing my Vince Lombardi speech," he said.
Varsity and junior varsity team members were downright gleeful to practice in their new, permanent home instead. They had plenty of room to spread out, deep water for treading, and distance for stroke training.
Watching from the deck, some swim team members marveled at the expansive facility. Others toured the adjoining office and dry land training room.
"I can't wait to use this!" one said.
Staff members praised the Mullan Contracting Company for completing the job before the due date.
The new facility will get extensive use from students in phys. ed. classes, on the three co-ed water polo teams, and on the three swim teams. It will also be home to the Eagle Swim Team and a popular venue for McDonogh's summer programs.
The aquatic center is named in honor of Henry A. Rosenberg, Jr. '48, trustee and chairperson of the school's current $50 million capital campaign, Becoming Our Best.
