During the final weekend of April, everyone on the Horn Theatre stage cut footloose. The musical, created from the 1980s movie of the same name, follows high schooler Ren after he moves from Chicago to a small town where dancing has been forbidden since a car accident claimed the lives of four students. Struggling to fit in and win the affections of the preacher's estranged daughter, Ren rallies the other students in an effort to hold a school dance. His efforts eventually pay off, leading to a prom and enabling the town to leave its tragedy behind them.
The hit show included performances of popular tunes from the movie, as well as rollicking dance scenes chroreographed by director Ilona Kessell. In a moment of backstage drama that rivaled what occurred onstage, the actress playing Wendy Jo fell behind the scenes and knocked out her front teeth. The show went on, and the next morning another cast member learned Wendy Jo's lines and songs and filled in for the final performance. The original Wendy Jo returned to school on Monday, mouth intact, and full of good cheer. Both performers were hailed as heroes by the headmaster for their ability to rise to the occasion.
