Headmaster Bo Dixon surprised Lower School science teacher Peggy Moag by naming her the recipient of the John T. Grega Endowed Teaching Chair at a faculty and staff meeting yesterday.
The unsuspecting award winner was sitting with colleagues in the Ceres M. Horn Theatre as Dixon began to reveal her identity. He called her a “born-to-teach teacher” whose classroom “overflows with warmth and wonders.”
During the five-minute tribute, the headmaster repeated accolades from Moag’s colleagues and parents of her students. Among them: “Whenever our son mentions this person’s name, it is always with total affection, love, and respect. This teacher is a big part of his life.”
Another: “One look in this teacher’s eyes and a child’s face lights up. The classroom is always full of mutual respect, endless energy, creativity, and joy.”
Dixon characterized the 14-year veteran faculty member as “loving, strong-willed, faithful, generous, honest, tireless – often arriving at school before sunrise to help students ‘find joy in work and play.’” He also praised her for the ways she supports and encourages her colleagues as well as her students.
When Dixon finally named the recipient as “Moagie,” the audience stood and cheered. A stunned and trembling Peggy Moag rose from her seat and made her way to the headmaster, who offered her a big hug and an engraved silver bowl. Meanwhile, her father, daughter, brother, and niece came forward to congratulate her.
The Grega Chair was established in 2003 by alumnus Vernon Wright and his family in honor of Director of Religious Studies John Grega. Its purpose is to recognize excellent teachers who are vital to the school community.
Since 1998, McDonogh has established five endowed faculty awards with generous gifts from benefactors like the Wright family. Each award, made for a period of three years, includes an annual stipend for the recipient. Additional interest generated from the endowment gifts goes into the faculty salary pool.
Peggy Moag has been teaching science to kindergarten through grade 2 since 2001. She began as a prefirst teacher in 1993 and switched to kindergarten in 1999.
