Examining Student Life

Chaired by school psychologist Marie Allee, the committee is charged with examining McDonogh's institutional philosophy and procedures relating to issues of student life, including the balance among the arts, athletics, and academics as well as current research regarding the developmentally appropriate use of time, workload, and homework expectations. The group, composed of faculty and administrators across the Lower, Middle and Upper schools who represent the arts, athletics, and academics, began meeting in the fall.

The March 3 discussion will focus on student life issues relevant to seventh through twelfth graders, while the March 10 program will cover those of kindergarten through sixth graders. Specific topics we plan to address include the arts and athletics requirement for graduation, the age-appropriateness of performance arts productions, the culture of over-achievement, the college admissions process, instructional pace, overscheduling, and down time for lower schoolers. Programs begin at 7 p.m.

Please join us for a brief presentation outlining the Student Life Committee's findings to date, followed by an open discussion. We would appreciate your input. Come and share your thoughts, ideas, and concerns with us.
