Fifth-Graders' Card Project Helps the Zoo

Fifth-graders started the project last October, after social studies teacher Jennifer Smith suggested that they help support the zoo's Adopt an Animal program. With guidance from art teacher Denise Wolf, each student made at least 10 cards. Students assembled their creations in packets of 10 and sold them for $8 per packet on Parent Conference Day in November.

After she accepted the students' contribution, Mrs. Cullen, the zoo's chief financial officer, told students how their project and others like it make a difference. The zoo is seeking contributions by February 14 to remain open and retain its animals.

The students found out that their card sale will benefit others besides the zoo animals. As Jennifer Smith explains, "The project not only helps the zoo, but because we chose the Adopt an Animal program, and we donated a certain amount of money, we 'earned' a free trip to the zoo for our organization. Fifth-graders will donate this trip to a group of students in the inner city who may not get that opportunity to visit the zoo."
